An Avocado A Day To Lower Cholesterol

According to the results of a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, conducted by a group of researchers led by Penny Kris-Etherton , an expert at Pennsylvania State University (University Park, United States), the avocado would be a valuable aid. in the fight against bad cholesterol.

After a couple of weeks, during which study participants had a typically American diet (with 34% of calories coming from fat, 51% from carbohydrates and 16% from protein), the researchers had referred some towards a regime characterized by a moderate fat intake (34% of total calories), others towards a low fat content (24% of total calories), and a third group towards a moderate fat content diet, with obligation to consume one avocado a day. At the end of the diet period, those who followed the low-fat plan had reduced bad cholesterol by 7.4 mg/dl, those who had followed the moderate one had decreased it by 8.3 mg/dl, while those who had also introduced avocado had recorded a decrease of 13.5 mg/dl.

Research has therefore shown how a constant intake of monounsaturated fats in the diet, of which avocado is very rich, can represent a healthy habit to improve the health of the organism. These fats – experts say – help reduce the risk of heart disease and heart attacks. They also provide nutrients that preserve the integrity of the body’s cells.

Avocado is also a good source of magnesium and potassium, both of which are useful in regulating blood pressure. According to Mexican research, the oil obtained from this exotic fruit is able to fight some bad oxygen molecules, which tend to destroy cell membranes, proteins and DNA itself.
